Construction & Development Associate

Our fast-paced, entrepreneurial cannabis REIT is seeking an experienced Construction & Development Associate or VP to join our Underwriting team. This position will report directly to the Head of Underwriting. The candidate will be instrumental in supporting the Underwriting team with day-to-day due diligence activities for our cannabis-focused REIT and will be the key player in evaluating future projects we intend to finance, monitoring and visiting in-progress construction projects, analyzing borrower draw requests, etc.


Lead Internal Strategic Initiatives and External Collaboration
  • Review of construction budgets, schedules, and contracts/subcontracts to ensure they are budgeted correctly
  • Review planned construction and development projects (drawings, plans, permits, surveys, zoning, etc)
  • Vet competence, financial stability, and suitability of General Contractors
  • Perform on-site visits before, during, and after construction
  • Review and recommend/amend/deny construction draws
  • Review change orders and communicate updates to Head of Underwriting and the Company
  • Interact with construction consultants, contractors, and borrowing groups to ensure all requirements are being met in accordance with loan agreements and plans, while determining if construction is progressing as expected
Construction Reporting
  • Prepare project status updates and effectively communicate progress to the Underwriting, Portfolio Management, and Executive Management teams of AFC Gamma
  • Prepare budget variance analysis and provide updates to the Head of Underwriting
  • Perform market research, to know costs in various states and by construction type
Lead the Construction Diligence Process
  • Assess plans for improvement and optimization of all applicable processes and systems involving construction as necessary
  • Collaborate with peers in other departments in pursuit of business objectives
  • Be the key construction thought leader resource for the Underwriting, Originations, Investor Relations, and Executive Management teams, if not the industry
  • Subject matter expert on cannabis construction and development to understand the necessary components of a successful buildout (e.g. lighting, fertigation, HVAC for cultivation, processing, and dispensaries)


  • Seasoned professional (5+ years) with college degree or more, who performed in a leadership capacity in RE development industry or a large construction firm
  • The candidate must have thorough knowledge of design development, construction document, construction estimating and budgeting
  • Be familiar with AIA forms to be used as a backup to draw requests
  • The candidate must have substantial field experience, understanding of the multiple design disciplines and of construction trades
  • Understanding of cannabis (preferred, but not necessary)

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, along with strong organization skills and comfortable with ambiguity
  • Highly motivated, takes initiative and requires minimal supervision
  • Willing to travel approx. 20-30% of the time
